SREE SWATHI THIRUNAL GOVT. COLLEGE OF MUSIC
Sri Swathi Thirunal College of Music (SSTCM), located in Thycaud, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, is a premier institution for classical music education in India. Over decades, it has become a pillar of Carnatic music pedagogy and has significantly contributed to the preservation and dissemination of the musical legacy of Maharaja Swathi Thirunal as well as to the broader classical and film music traditions in Kerala and beyond.
Its origins can be traced back to 1939, when the cultural vision of the princely state of Travancore paved the way for a dedicated centre to preserve and promote the rich musical heritage of Maharaja Sree Swathi Thirunal Rama Varma, the legendary royal composer who left behind hundreds of compositions in multiple languages. The institution was originally established under the name “The Music Academy” by Sree Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma, the last ruling Maharaja of Travancore, and was guided academically by stalwarts like Harikesanellur Muthayya Bhagavatar, Semmangudi R. Srinivasa Iyer and GN Balasubramniam , who played a major role in shaping its early syllabus and standards.
The primary goal of the academy at its inception was to systematize the teaching of Carnatic music and to ensure that Swathi Thirunal’s compositions were preserved, practiced, and passed on to future generations. The college’s foundation is usually attributed to the royal initiative with Dr. L. Muthayya Bhagavathar (Harikesanallur Muthiah Bhagavathar ) playing a central role in establishing the academy and serving as its first principal. He compiled and tuned many of Swathi Thirunal’s kritis and set the academic tone of the institution in its early years. Semmangudi R. Srinivasa Iyer succeeded Muthiah Bhagavatar as the Principal. Semmangudi’s association gave the college national stature because he was one of the 20th century’s most influential Carnatic vocalists and pedagogue. He helped systematize teaching, concerts and the Swathi repertory at the Academy Sri G. N. Balasubrahmaniam was another illustrious principal who is often listed among the line of eminent heads; his tenure reinforced high-performance standards and brought additional visibility.
The academy also attracted some of the finest musicians of the time to serve as teachers, further strengthening its position as a centre of excellence. Nellai T.V Krishnamurthy, Mavelikkara Prabhakara Varma, Prof, Kumarakerala Varma , Palkkulangara Ambika Devi Mavelikkara K. Velukkutty Nair, Palackadu C.S Krishnamurthy, Parassala Ravi, Chalakkudi Narayana Swami, K.S Narayana Swami, Udayabhanu etc. are some of the exponents who served as senior instructors of this college. The college’s prestige rests largely on these masters who connected royal patronage, classical scholarship and performance pedagogy; their teachings of Swathi Thirunal kritis and Carnatic repertoire became a regional standard. The current principal of this institution is Prof. V.R Veena.
In its early years, the institution offered foundational music training through courses known as Gayaka (for men) and Gayika (for women). As the academy grew in stature and demand for more advanced training increased, it introduced higher-level Diploma courses such as Sangeetha Vidwan, Ganabhooshanam and Ganapraveena, enabling students to pursue professional-level music education.
In 1962, the institution was re-named Sree Swathi Thirunal College of Music in honour of the royal composer whose legacy it continues to uphold. A major milestone came in 1999, when the college was officially affiliated with the University of Kerala, allowing it to introduce formal degree programmes such as the Bachelor of Performing Arts (BPA) and Master of Performing Arts (MPA). These programmes expanded academic opportunities for students and aligned the college with modern educational standards.
The college currently offers degree (BA) and Master’s Degree (MA) education options in V ocal music, instrumental specializations (veena, violin, mridangam), and dance (Kerala Natanam). The college’s Degree programmes have now shifted to FYUGP , which is a part of the National Education Policy.
Over the decades, the college has also upgraded its infrastructure, notably establishing a modern recording studio that enables students to refine their performance skills through audio–visual analysis. The serene campus at Thycaud has remained a cultural landmark, nurturing generations of musicians who have gone on to excel in classical music, playback singing, composing, and teaching.
Over eight decades the college has trained many musicians who later achieved prominence in Carnatic music and film and playback music. Numerous performers and teachers across generations trace their formal training here. Many eminent musicians like Dr. K. J. Yesudas, Neyyattinkara Vasudevan, M. G. Radhakrishnan, Raveendran (Raveendran Master), Parassala B. Ponnammal, Dr. K. Omanakutty, B. Sasikumar, K. G. Jayan , Trivandrum V Surendran, B. Harikumar etc. were the noted alumni of this college to mention a few.
The college functions both as an educational institution and as a custodian of Maharaja Swathi Thirunal’s compositions and the regional Carnatic tradition. It has had direct influence on Kerala’s musical life — training performers, teachers and composers who shaped film and classical music in the state and beyond. Its position in the capital city , Thiruvananthapuram and its historical links with the Travancore royal family make it a cultural landmark.
Sri Swathi Thirunal College of Music is not just an educational institution — it is a custodian of a rich musical legacy. Its historical roots, its mission to preserve the compositions of Maharaja Swathi Thirunal, and its rigorous academic and practical training make it a vital institution in India’s classical music landscape. The success and influence of its alumni — ranging from legendary singers like Yesudas to film composers like Raveendran — underscore the college’s continuing relevance and impact. As it modernizes and evolves, SSTCM has the potential to deepen its contribution to music, both within Kerala and globally.
